Aside from the obviously philanthropic nature of the project, Never Ending Gardens encourages community gardening for reasons of personal health, sustainability, and community bonding. The Never Ending Gardens project also has an educational lesson for all of us back at home as well. In the US and other developed countries, community gardening has been increasing in popularity among those that live in cities because of these reasons. The ability to garden enables people across the world to unify in the act of producing food, one that is as fulfilling as work, as relaxing as leisure, blogging and as beneficial to the community as any other form of development.

Instead of simply helping the impoverished, Never Ending Gardens show the people how to manage on their own and integrate a more nutritional diet into their way of life. The volunteers with this project expect that families affected by this movement should be able to harvest approximately 2.5 vegetables per week during the first year and approximately 5 vegetables per week in the second and following years. All this has been done to combat poverty and health problems.

122 volunteers went to Swaziland and began planting seeds and blogging educating the local residents about how to maintain small gardens. The volunteers helped create 20,000 gardens in Swaziland, then moved on Botswana, South Africa, and Lesotho, doing the same thing. The success of these initial projects have led them to plan on continuing this throughout Africa (by progressively moving North) to improve the health and life quality of villages there, as well as making the economies in those areas more sustainable. Never Ending Gardens, a non-profit division of Dream for Africa, began its project in 2004 in the southern African country, Swaziland.
