Simple Quilt Patterns - Things It Is Know
A quilt is a wonderful gift to give. You can make the quilt yourself, or you can get other family members to help out. A family gift is very special. You can use fabric pens to leave a special message on your square. If you don't have a quilting machine you can either quilt it by hand or even have it sent out and have someone else do the quilting for you.
Clothes to use: Start with clean items. Besides the baby clothes you can use bibs, caps, socks, Halloween costumes, blankets, linens, special curtains and nursery items.
If you are truly a beginner quilter then consider purchasing a kit to make the baby quilt. These can be purchased at a local fabric store, online, or even Walmart. They walk you step by step through the quilting process. Included in the kit is everything that you will need to accomplish a completed quilt. This is an easy way for beginners to get their feet wet and learn all of the basics of sewing. The only drawback is that you have to choose the designs that are available. There are a great deal of options to choose from if you look at a variety of places. Once you have gathered all of the necessary skills then you can work on making more original works at a later date.
Quilt Blanket Another way to preserve memories is to make a memory quilt. A memory quilt can be a blanket or a wall hanging. You collect items of clothing as your child outgrows them. You cut the clothes into squares of the same size and save your collection until you have enough to make a blanket or wall-hanging. You can also use pieces of blankets or sheets. Be sure you cut a sample that is not worn thin. On blankets and sheets the outside edges are usually in the best shape. For clothing you would avoid the area covering the knees or the seat of the pants.
String quilts made by women in Gee's Bend, Alabama, and Mid-western Amish communities, have become an art form. Their stringed blocks are often square in shape or close to it, with one above the other. Sometimes sashing strips divide the blocks. The Amish string quilts can look like stacks of small squares. This pattern is named Coins.
Shortly after her death I came across the quilt that she made for my mother a few years before losing her eyesight. Suddenly it began to dawn upon me. When I looked at the quilt, I did not see a blanket. Instead, I saw a scrapbook made from material. It was as if, by looking at the quilt, I was paging through my family album. I remembered the times when we baked cookies with my mother, the times when my sisters and I played with our tea-set, the first "Superman"-movie I saw with my dad, my first day at school, the visits we had with our grandparents and many other special memories. Each memory was carefully interwoven into this quilt.
Once a quilt block template has been created it should be put on the fabric lined up with the fabric's grain on one straight edge. Then with either a tailor's chalk or a quilter's pencil it can be drawn around. Folding several layers of the fabric accordion style will create several patches at once. Then after the template has been stapled to the layers one can cut the pieces out. If it is possible, it is of great value to use a cutting mat and a rotary cutter should they be available.
Quilts are what most people are familiar with, I won't say everyone because there's always someone who is the exception to the rule, and most likely you have one or more quilts on your bed right now.
