Shortly after her death I came across the quilt that she made for my mother a few years before losing her eyesight. Suddenly it began to dawn upon me. Don't be afraid to use your handmade quilt. The layers and the warmth of the batting make it perfect for keeping you warm cold winter nights. Even after many years of use, this author has several quilts that are still in excellent condition.

As far as using a detergent is concerned do not go for the type that is used for casual wears as it would be harsh and fade the colour. Instead go to craft, sewing or fabric stores where one would easily get mild washing powders made especially for delicate fabrics. These days' liquid detergents which are very gentle on fabrics are easily available in supermarkets as well. Make sure to set the washing machine accurately as per the requirement. The bed cover gets very heavy when it is wet because it is made up of three layers so it will also need lot of physical effort.

Some women used larger scraps, and often the block's strips were a variety of widths. Scrappy strips were asymmetrical and uneven, or pointed, or on the bias. Whatever fabrics were available, they were used as is. There was no time to waste cutting them to size. Women used an old blanket or quilt as the filler and tied the layers together; winter was near -- no time for quilting it.

Another way to customize a blanket is by including text in it. This may be a favorite punch line; a line from a song; a secret code between the two of you; a meaningful date; or even a surname.
