For anyone that is considering fashioning a baby quilt pattern this is an ideal place to learn how to do it.<br><br>Shortly after her death I came across the quilt that she made for my mother a few years before losing her eyesight. It was as if, by looking at the quilt, I was paging through my family album. I remembered the times when we baked cookies with my mother, the times when my sisters and I played with our tea-set, the first "Superman"-movie I saw with my dad, my first day at school, the visits we had with our grandparents and many other special memories. Each memory was carefully interwoven into this quilt.<br><br>Blanket Quilt Then the second layer, usually a thin blanket or a worn sheet, was placed on the quilt frame in the same manner - always checking to make sure that the corners were at right angles.<br><br>It was a time where supplies were often rare and arrived at odd times. When it did arrive it was often impossible to purchase by the poor settlers. Making the material was similarly complicated and the cost of the weaving made the constructing of the quilt later less of an asset as it could often take a month to create half of a blanket.<br><br>Always wash your handmade quilt in warm or cold water using the delicate cycle on your washing machine. The individual blocks may be made up of slightly different fabrics which will shrink differently. Also, the vibrant colors may fade over time from hot water.<br><br>This means there are a variety of patterns, whether its a plain or single colour quilt, or printed and stitched patterns. There is no one single design or pattern that defines a quilt, but quilts are most commonly a single colour.<br><br>Here is a basic Crazy Quilt pattern you can use to try your hand at crazy quilting. Just remember that you can do this many different ways, and that this is only meant as a suggestion.<br><br>You can either hand quilt or machine quilt your baby shower gift. Following the perimeter of the shape or you can choose to use a quilter's pencil and template and draw a design and quilt the design. Either way, you will be stitching through all three layers, which not only fasten the layers together, but create a design, as you quilt. | |
