As a riverboat she's huge, but small compared to the other newer casinos in town. Her stainless steel hull used to shine in the sun as brightly as the arch, but not anymore. The Admiral first started out as a side-wheeled steel hulled steamboat called the Albatross, built in 1907. She started as a working vessel, carrying railroad cars up and down the river.
In 1937 a company in St. Louis called Sreckfus Steamers bought her and started her career as an excursion vessel. In 1940 the ship underwent extensive conversion from wooden decks to four modern decks in an art-deco style. She was renamed the S.S. Admiral, the largest river cruise ship in the world and the first Mississippi Riverboat to be fully air-conditioned. In 1973-1974 diesels engines were added, bringing her horsepower up to a whopping 2,700. In 1979 the Admiral was converted into a land-based entertainment complex and she was stripped of her engines.
In the 1990's she was renamed The President Casino. The President has struggled financially over the years and recently the owners declared bankruptcy and road trip slot machine put her up for sale.
